African Elephant Crossing, the Zoo’s new pachyderm exhibit, will transform the entire front entrance of the Zoo and will be one of the most visible and impressive exhibits built at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
African Elephant Crossing will bring together best practices in animal management, naturalistic environments and public education, and will strengthen the Zoo’s role as a center for excellence in scientific research. Best of all, it will engage millions of visitors in a compelling and memorable wildlife experience.
African Elephant Crossing will quadruple the existing space for the Zoo’s pachyderms and allow the Zoo to have a socially complete herd of 6 to 8 animals, including bulls. Set to break ground in early 2008 and open to the public in 2010, it is a strategic expansion of the Zoo’s long-standing commitment to exhibit and conserve African wildlife.
Call of the Wild
The African elephant population has plummeted from 1.5 million to fewer than 300,000 in the wild in the past two decades. Zoos are working together to study and save this magnificent species. A select group of ten zoos with elephant breeding capabilities – including Cleveland Metroparks Zoo – will ensure a healthy captive population for future generations.
Your Support
All gifts to the Capital Campaign for African Elephant Crossing are deeply appreciated and will help us build a better future for elephants. Donors of $2,500 or more will be permanently recognized at the exhibit. Donors of $25,000 or more will receive highly visible recognition on the Honor Wall, located at the center of the exhibit. All recognition lasts for the lifetime of African Elephant Crossing.
