In its inaugural year, the Tails & Cocktails Speaker Series provides a one-of-a-kind experience. Guests will hear experts from the Zoo and the Northeast Ohio community discussing a variety of topics impacting health and welfare, wildlife conservation and science education.

Tickets: As staff and volunteers of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, tickets are available for the discounted price of $5 each.

Tails and Cocktails: Gut Reaction (SOLD OUT)

What we eat – and how it’s processed during digestion – has an impact on health. Learn how Zoo scientists are working with sloth bear and orangutans diets and studying the bacterial fermentation process to improve animal welfare and health, and how we can apply these findings to human health.

Speakers: Gail Cresci, Ph.D., RD, digestive disease and nutrition specialist with Cleveland Clinic’s Pediatric and Adult department’s of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition and department of inflammation & immunity; Andrew Loudon, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Science Research Fellow; Pam Dennis, D.V.M., Ph.D., Cleveland Metroparks Zoo epidemiologist; Christopher W. Kuhar, Ph.D., Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director; Ben Bebenroth, Spice Hospitality Group's Chef, Farmer, Founder; enjoy fermented food samplings and recipes from Spice Kitchen + Bar and samples of Terrestrial Brewing’s Conservation Series beer, Probiotic Warrior.

Tails and Cocktails: Giraffe on the Move

What does it take to reverse the trend of declining giraffe populations in the wild? Hear from an expert in the field, a local conservation champion, as well as Cleveland staff members who helped relocate a herd of giraffe to more secure lands in Africa.

Speakers: Dr. Julian Fennessy, Co-Founder and Co-Director of Giraffe Conservation Foundation; Tom Leiden, Cleveland Zoological Society director and President of GCF-USA; Andi Kornak, Deputy Executive Director, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo; enjoy a chance to feed the Zoo’s herd from the Ben Gogolick Giraffe Encounter and hear more from Cleveland keepers and veterinary team members about giraffe welfare in Cleveland and abroad.
