As a result of COVID, school programs were put on hold because kids did not return to school; however, other projects, such as those involving field operations, were able to move forward with modifications to ensure health and safety.
GCF's (Giraffe Conservation Foundation) team in Uganda continues to protect giraffes in multiple national parks. In addition to GCF teams de-snaring, surveying and anti-poaching work in Murchison Falls National Park, the Giraffe Education, Awareness and Research (GEAR) team at Lake Mburo in Uganda has continued to undertake monitoring of its growing giraffe population. They were lucky to spot a new addition to the herd, and it is amazing to see the second generation grow in numbers. GCF’s team in Uganda also recently completed a monitoring survey trip to train and support the Uganda Wildlife Authority staff in Pian Upe WR where we moved the giraffe late last year. In Kidepo Valley National Park GCF and UWA conducted a systematic population survey as part of the long-term population monitoring in this area, an operation that included long-term capacity building in the area of wildlife monitoring for UWA personnel.
