Leaf cutter ants are actually one of the strongest animals on the planet! They use their extremely powerful jaws to cut and carry leaves back to their nest. The ants make a compost pile which then initiates the growth of fungus — which is used to feed the colony. There are 47 species of leaf cutter ants and they are endemic to South and Central America, Mexico, and the southern United States. Check out our extensive leaf cutter ant exhibit in The RainForest and see if you can follow the same ant (through tunnels and underground nests) from one end of the habitat to the other!
