It's official: as of September 10, construction is underway on Primate Forest. The Zoo's largest-ever capital project, Primate Forest will not just create a new home for our gorilla troop, orangutans, and the many species currently in The RainForest – it will reimagine the Zoo experience in ways yet to be seen in North America, securing Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as both a vanguard in science education and a sought-after tourist destination.
With a focus on forests, this space will connect visitors to the importance of - and connection between - healthy animals, healthy people, and healthy habitats. It will also put the Zoo's scientific expertise front and center, inviting guests to see exclusive animal care and husbandry practices.
Primate Forest is a multi-phased project to transform and significantly expand the Zoo’s RainForest into a 140,000 square foot, world-class indoor destination that will immerse guests in the wonders of the natural world through interactive technology, multi-story play structures and more. The project will incorporate vanguard technology and the latest research on animal care and conservation to add two new expansive, multi-story habitats for gorillas and orangutans.
The first phase is expected to be complete in 2026 and will add a new welcome center with the CrossCountry Mortgage Forest Home, state-of-the-art animal habitats including a new outdoor orangutan habitat, dynamic storytelling technology and exhibits, a play area and enhanced dining and retail experiences. A future phase will add indoor and outdoor spaces for gorillas that reimagine the Zoo experience and create never-before-seen viewing opportunities for visitors. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2032 as part of the Zoo’s 150th anniversary.
The first phase of the project requires the temporary closure of The RainForest until its completion in 2026. During the closure, the majority of animals currently in the RainForest will remain, with some temporary relocations as habitats undergo upgrades and enhancements. Your Zoo’s animal experts will continue to provide the highest caliber of care for the animals in the building throughout construction.
