TRUTH! Unlike many reptiles, gharial parents care for their young until they are old enough to look out for themselves. Often, multiple females will lay eggs in nests near one another. Once hatched, baby gharials join together in a group called a “crèche,” which is protected by the adult females as well as the male. When they sense danger, hatchlings will hurry to their parents for safety – sometimes piling onto their heads.
