A. We look for novel ways for them to exhibit positive, natural behaviors - it's interesting to see how the individual orangutans approach the items differently. — Kim Jansen, Animal Keeper
Our enrichment program is built around promoting natural behaviors, and we get creative to provide items that require a cognitive approach – something to figure out or work through. The orangutans regularly receive puzzle and box feeders with foods like seeds or raisins hidden inside, nesting materials, bubbles, logs, hanging feeders, and balls. They are inventive and can find something to do with many everyday items.

Their new habitat in Primate Forest has been designed with their natural behaviors in mind, too. They’ll have outdoor access for the first time, and much more vertical space where we can place enrichment items to encourage climbing. Sway poles and hanging ropes will create more opportunity for brachiating – or swinging – like they would in the wild. They also enjoy people watching and will have new ways to observe the visitors who are observing them!
