Joining the Zoo Society after nearly 20 years as an animal keeper, Mike’s love of animals and dedication to the Zoo’s mission make him an insightful advocate for what we do. He was interested in animals from a young age, worked at pet stores growing up, and earned a degree in Zoology from Kent State University.
Favorite animal: "Too many to choose, but hippos, snow leopards, and lemurs come to mind."
Favorite spot at the Zoo: Primate, Cat & Aquatics building
Dream wildlife travel destination: Madagascar
His career in animal care led him to some unique places like St. Catherine Island, a protected island in Georgia where he tended to free-roaming lemurs, and Busch Gardens in Tampa, where hippos and hyenas were among the highlights. He joined the team at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 2014 and spent most of his time in the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building before working with the orangutans in the RainForest for his last few years as a keeper.
Interfacing with zoo visitors and donors was part of Mike’s job as a keeper, and he is excited to connect with the Zoo’s supporters in a new capacity with the Zoo Society. “This is my childhood Zoo,” he said, “and being able to contribute to its mission in a new way is really exciting.”
Mike’s free time is spent hiking the Metroparks, watching movies and supporting Cleveland’s sports teams, and traveling to new places – he particularly enjoys exploring our national parks.
