“The Zoo is the place for me. There is stress, sure, but you’re still going to the Zoo.”
Favorite animal: "American alligators – as a youth volunteer at Audubon Zoo, it was one of the first species I got to work with. It’s the perfect predator, and it just hasn’t changed. It's a good design."
Favorite spot at the Zoo: "Guest Resource Center. I like people watching and seeing people who are about to have fun, and people who have just had fun."
Dream wildlife travel destination: "Australia. Kangaroos, koalas, all these things with pouches. There's so much there to see."
Brian got his start in the zoo world at age 13 when he began volunteering as a junior keeper at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, and while life has led him down other paths along the way, he always found his way back to the Zoo. It was at Audubon Zoo that he met his then-future wife, a talented horticulturist who would eventually drag him up to Cleveland for a career opportunity. Spoiler alert: that horticulturist is Zoo Horticulture & Grounds Manager Leigh Anne Lomax, and try as he might, Brian couldn’t find anything besides the occasional weather to dislike about Northeast Ohio.
He likes working with people and seeing the excitement of zoo kids each day. “If they’re happy and excited to be here as kids, they’re going to keep being excited about it. In 20 years, they might be a member or donor.”
Hiking, birding, and lots of yard work and gardening fill Brian’s free time; the way he sees it, “the house is just an excuse to have a garden.” He has also coached and volunteered with both his kids’ Science Olympiad teams, and catches the football game when he can (he’s a Saints fan).
